Abstract Ceres, with a diameter of almost 1000km by far the largest asteroid, comes up for a very favourable opposition in April 1991: the distance from the Earth will be only 1.65 AU (for comparison it will be 1.95 in July 1992 and 1.90 in October 1993. The next such favourable opposition will be in January 1995 with a distance of 1.60 AU). At this distance the asteroid will subtend an angle of about 0.8 arcsec, i.e. about 35 FOC f/96 pixels.
