Abstract FOC images will be obtained in the UV and visible of galaxies whose isotropic properties are the same as those of BL Lac objects. A search will be made for weak unresolved UV nuclei that would be expected if the relativistic beaming theory of normal BL Lac emission is correct. Description of proposed observations. The FOC will be used to obtain high resolution images of several Fanaroff-Riley type I ellipticals. Additional targets are being proposed by the FOC team. Six of the most promising targets will be followed up spectroscopically with the FOS. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. The high spatial resolution and UV response of ST is needed to find the faint unresolved UV nuclei in galaxies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5.
