Abstract This proposal is part of the TTSC request entitled, "Distortion Calibration in FGS 1 and FGS 2, FGS-to-FGS Alignment Calibration". This portion is listed separately due to the time critical nature of one of the orbits. OFAD in FGS 3 which will be performed in December 1992 together with the Mini OFAD's in FGS's 1 and 2 which will be performed in January 1993 will provide a new set of FGS calibration parameters. One of the objectives of the STScI Focal Plane Stability test is to monitor changes to these parameters by repeatedly observing targets in the cluster M35. Since the cluster is near the ecliptic, only two vehicle orientations are needed, the "fall" and the "spring" pointings (see attached pickles plots). Since the Mini OFAD targets are not necessarily the same targets used in the Focal Plane Stability Test, tie in orbits using the Focal Plane Stability targets are needed shortly before and after the Mini OFAD activities. Scientific Justification. ready a month prior to the execution of the Mini OFAD's or may not contain sufficient time to perform the tie-in observations. (Currently, it is anticipated that only FGS 3 will have a tie in orbit in November 1992.) Hence, this proposal constitutes a special request for one fall tie-in orbit to be performed in late November or December 1992 and one spring tie-in orbit to be performed in late January or early February 1993. (See TTSC request form "Distortion Calibration in FGS 1 and FGS 2, FGS-to-FGS Alignment calibration".) FGS's 1 AND 2 ARE THE ASTROMETRY UNITS The tie-in orbits using M35 targets are required before and after the Mini OFAD activity for FGS's 1 and 2. (The Mini OFAD activities are anticipated to occur in early January 1993.) It is particularly important to observe the tie-in targets since they differ from the Mini OFAD stars. The combination of tie-in orbits and the OFAD/Mini OFAD activity freeze, in time, the distortion configuration of the OTA/FGS system allowing subsequent observations of the the tie-in orbits to monitor plate independent changes in the distortion. The fall tie-in orbit, requested for early December, is critical since the anti-sun passage occurs in mid- December. After the anti -sun passage, the fall pointing will not be observable until the following September. The combination of the first "tie-in" orbits of M35 and subsequent visits to the those targets (via the Focal Plane Stability test) allow for the plate independent monitoring of distortion changes in the FGSs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3. Description of proposed observations. Test Description: Fall Pointings for FGS's 1 and 2: Using FGS's 1 or 2 as the astrometer, acquire guide stars in Fine Lock in the guiding units. Observe the targets for the fall Focal Plane Stability test in FGS's 1 and 2 no earlier than 30 days prior to the Mini OFAD activities in FGS's 1 and 2. Note, however, that the fall pointing must be observed prior to anti-sun passage which occurs in mid December 1992. The PUPIL is required for all observations. A total of two orbits, one for each FGS, is required. Spring Pointings for FGS's 1 and 2: Using FGS's 1 or 2 as the astrometer, acquire guide stars in Fine Lock in the guiding units. Observe the targets for the spring Focal Plane Stability test in FGS's 1 and 2 no later (and preferably sooner) than 30 days after the Mini OFAD activities in FGS's 1 and 2. The PUPIL is required for all observations. A total of two orbits, one for each FGS, is required. For the combined spring and fall observations 4 orbits of observation time are required. The numbering convention for the LINENUM's follow: LINENUM 10-41 fall orbit FGS 1 LINENUM 50-64 spring orbit FGS 1 LINENUM 90-116 fall orbit FGS 2 LINENUM 130-162 spring orbit FGS 2 Integration time on all astrometry stars is 10 seconds. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. This is an FGS distortion diagnostic test that falls under the category of Engineering/Observatory level test. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Description of special scheduling requirements. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Fine Lock guidance is required. All astrometry acquisitions are in POS MODE, Fine Lock. The PUPIL is used for guidance and astrometry observations. Integration time on each target is 10 seconds. (This is required in order to acquire 30 stars in some orbits.) 32 KB FGS telemetry is required. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6. Description of special calibration exposures. Question 5 outlines the special requirements for this test ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 7. Data reduction and analysis plans. 1.Using the PASS Mini OFAD software the tie-in orbits will be compared to subsequent orbits in the recurring Focal Plane Stability test in order to monitor distortion changes within the FGS's. 2. Additional software resident at HDOS will be implemented to analyze data quality and to verify PASS results regarding changes to the distortion parameters. Analytical and computer models for the OTA/FGS system will be used to extract the effects of changing the secondary position on the changes noted between the tie-in orbits subsequent Focal Plane Stability observations. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of previous HST work. Observing time from the following dates were obtained for a baseline calibration and for monitoring long term changes in the distortion parameters: 90.358 Mini OFAD Current Baseline Distortion 91.357 abbreviated Mini OFAD in FGS's 1 and 3 to detect long term distortion changes from December 91 to December 92 91.150 Mini OFAD 92.150 abbreviated Mini OFAD to detect long term distortion changes from May 91 to May 92. The previous observations were made on NGC 5617 with the objectives of determining a baseline FGS calibration and determining long term variations in the distortion parameters. The observation discussed in this proposal will use M35 and measure the variations of the calibration parameters on a short term (30 day) interval with the Focal Plane Stability test. The major results from the first block of tests was to prove that the FGS calibration parameters were changing over a year and to obtain a baseline calibration of the as they pertain to pointing. The results were the computation of FGS parameters which were uplinked to the DF224 using the December 1990 data. The analysis of the remaining data showed that changes in the FGS distortion parameters can be as large as 100 mas per year. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 11.
