Abstract We propose to make a direct imaging of the disk observed around the star 68 Oph at the Pic du Midi Observatory. The high quality data produced by the high resolution of the anti-blooming WFPC2 will permit to reach 3 goals: i) as 68 Oph is the component of a binary system, with the WFPC2 it will be possible to measure the characteristics of the binary (separation and position angle) as well as to make an accurate photometry of the two components; ii) the inner boundary of the disk will be directly observed with short exposure times; iii) long exposure times will probe its outer extension. The same observations will be done on the reference star 4 Aql which pictures will be used for the data reduction. Besides, we propose to detect the possible gaseous disk around Oph 68 through very sensitive UV spectral signatures with the unprecedented resolution and sensitivity of the GHRS. This is absolutely needed to provide disk hydrodynamical models and disk interacting with binaries models with new sets of data and to study the only one complementary example of proto-planetary disk to the BETA-Pictoris one. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9. Description of proposed observations. We propose to observe 68 Oph with a NaI filter in order to reduce contrast between star and disk and also to reduce the blooming of WFPC2 in the central part of the star. We propose to use WFPC2 with the anti-blooming mode. The width of the filter is chosen to have 1 000000 e- (maximum of e- per pixel) per second in the central part of the star. The exposure time is computed to reach m=7 arcsec-2 at the maximum of dynamic. The number of exposures is chosen to reach m=16 arcsec-2 (estimated brightness of the disk at 2 arcsec from the star) with S/N=10. We can expand the magnitude of detection by binning pixels to reach a value of m=20 arcsec-2 (estimation of the brightness at 10 arcsec of the star). As the central part of the image is strongly over exposed an important amount of light will be present over all the CCD. Thus a very good knowledge of the PSF is needed. To detect a possible dust signature, we propose to use a filter centered close to 2000A. We can also study the dust albedo by using narrow filters centred on U,B,V,R, and I. Anti-blooming observations of Beta Pictoris showed changes of albedo between different filters, particularly closer to the star (Vidal-Madjar et al., 1992). From the results in these different filters it may be possible to compare the dust albedo to the one of different asteroidal or meteoritic materials (Gaffey M.J., Mc Cord T.B., 1979, in: Asteroids, 688, eds T.Gehrels). In order to have an estimation of the physical circumstellar matter we will observe the FeII, MgII and MnII lines. The MgII and FeII lines will be done for the two stars of the binary. If the furthest one is behind the disk we will then have a direct access to the circumstellar material by comparing the two results. Otherwise, we will obtain a measure of ISM. Page 3 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4. Justification of need for HST observations. Our extensive ground based survey with a similar technique as the one we proposed to use with the WFPC2 (anti-blooming mode) showed that it was difficult to get closer than 1.5 arcsec to the star. The corrected ST PSF allows now to get much closer to the central star in a way clearly impossible from the ground. Also the furthest extend of the disk can only be observed from space where the contrast with the sky background is more favorable. The observations of the disk close to the star are only possible with the HST WFPC2. The possible hole in the dust disk can only be imaged with our technique (WFPC2 with anti-blooming mode). As far as spectrophotometry is concerned, although a lot could be done from the ground, as we have demonstrated for BETA-Pictoris, it is clear that having access to essentially only the CaII H and K lines is a strong limitation. Besides, IUE presents too severe limitations in both resolution and S/N to allow a very good data acquisition, especially in the case of the fainter companion of 68 Oph. The FeII line should permit to have access to characteristics of the disk by comparing the results for 68 Oph and for its companion. The MgII and MnI lines will give us information about the density, temperature, composition and distribution of the circumstellar material. It is clear that any ground-based or IUE observing plan could never give such informations and our recent observations of BETA-Pictoris proved to be very efficient. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5. Summarize the main results obtained from previous related programs. The data from ID 3482 were obtained in December 1992 and delivered to the PI at the end of January 1992. The data confirmed the scenario of falling and evaporating bodies on to the star and revealed clearly a CO absorption signature attributed to a permanent circumstellar gas cloud probably generated by the evaporation of cometary like objects at few AUs from the star.
